DeMille is a clever writer with character banter that makes the journey funny as well as exciting. John Corey is a witty smart-ass. A semi-retired NYPD detective, he gets roped into an undercover charade with a shady private detective agency that's running a corrupt party-palace for Long Island pols and cops. Corey thinks he has it all under control....until he doesn't. The dialogue keeps the pace up in an otherwise plodding story, then accelerates into a dramatic, page turning climax. It's a fun book.
